Karmelitenkloster

Romanesque Carmelite cloister with celebrated carved capitals

The Carmelite monastery on the Kaulberg, founded in the thirteenth century and still home to a small Carmelite community. The cloister — a square of Romanesque arcades around a green garth — has capitals carved with extraordinary variety, every column different, from Old Testament scenes to medieval grotesques. Quiet, free to enter on weekday afternoons, often empty.
