Neue Residenz

Baroque prince-bishops' palace with rose garden and Apartments

The Baroque prince-bishops' residence on the cathedral square, built in two stages between 1697 and 1703 by Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer. Inside is the Imperial Hall with ceiling frescoes by Melchior Steidl, the prince-bishops' state apartments preserved with their original furniture, and an outpost of the Bavarian State Painting Collection. Behind the building, the geometric rose garden gives one of the best panoramas of the city — rooftops dropping away to the river and Michaelsberg Abbey beyond.
