Bayreuth is a compact city and the main sights in the centre are easily covered on foot. The walk between the Margravial Opera House in the centre and Haus Wahnfried takes about 10 minutes; the Festspielhaus on the Grüner Hügel is a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride north of the centre.
The Hermitage garden, 4 km east, is best reached by taxi or bicycle. City buses connect the main neighbourhoods, though the frequency is low by big-city standards. During the festival season, shuttle buses run between the Hauptbahnhof, the centre, and the Festspielhaus.
