Stadtkirche (City Church)

The Stadtkirche — the main Protestant parish church of Bayreuth — stands in the old market square at the heart of the historic centre, and its twin towers are one of the defining shapes of the city skyline. The current structure dates mostly from the late Gothic period (15th–16th centuries), with subsequent Baroque modifications. The interior is relatively plain compared to the Catholic churches of Bavaria, but the carved choir stalls and the Renaissance-era epitaphs on the walls are worth attention.

The Stadtkirche sits at the edge of a compact old town that rewards a slow wander. The market square around it, the Maximilianstrasse pedestrian axis, and the side streets between them have enough 18th-century architecture — palaces, townhouses, gates — to make Bayreuth feel like a real Residenzstadt rather than just a Wagner shrine. The Margrave Fountain in the square, one of the wiki-documented landmarks, marks the centre of this historic core.
