The Natural History Museum of Coburg occupies a building on the edge of the old town and holds a regional collection focused on the geology, fauna, and flora of northern Bavaria and the Franconian highlands. It is the sort of museum that works best with children, though the geological sections — covering the Jurassic limestone landscapes of the nearby Franconian Switzerland and Altmühl Valley — are genuinely interesting for adults with any interest in the region's landscape.
The exhibits include a good collection of regional minerals and fossils, and a series of dioramas showing local habitats from the Fichtelgebirge uplands to the Franconian river valleys. It is not a large museum, and two hours is more than enough — but it gives useful context for exploring the surrounding countryside.
