Dachau Castle

Renaissance castle with baroque gardens and Alpine views

Only one wing survives from the original four-wing Renaissance castle, rebuilt in baroque style in the early 18th century by court architect Joseph Effner. Inside, the great hall preserves a remarkable Renaissance casket ceiling by cabinet maker Hans Wisreuther and monochrome paintings by Hans Thonauer.

The castle garden is a delight in its own right, with baroque lime-tree arcades that have survived unchanged for three centuries and an adjoining English landscape garden designed by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell. From the castle hill, the view stretches across Munich to the Alps on clear days.

Open May to September, Saturday and Sunday, 2pm to 5pm. Guided tours on Sundays at 2:30pm. Reach it on bus 720.
