Old Town (Altstadt)

Dachau's old town climbs a ridge above the Amper river, with Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse as its main artery — lined with pastel-painted townhouses, small shops, and a couple of good Bavarian restaurants. The whole area is compact enough to cover on foot in an hour.

At the top of the hill, the castle garden offers one of the best views in the region: on clear days the Alpine panorama to the south stretches from the Wetterstein to the Chiemgau Alps, with the suburban rooftops of Munich visible in the middle distance. Below the castle, a path leads down through the garden to the old Amper valley. The town is far more pleasant than most visitors expect, given the single association that brings most of them here.
