Altstadt

Fürth's old town is an architectural time capsule. Because the city was spared the heaviest Allied bombing in 1945 — Nuremberg, seven kilometres east, was largely levelled — the Altstadt retains an unusual density of 19th-century streetscape: Biedermeier townhouses, Wilhelmine civic buildings, and fine Jugendstil facades along the Hornschuchpromenade and Königstrasse.

Walk south from the central Rathaus along Gustavstrasse into the core of the old quarter, where the streets narrow and the proportions shrink to something more medieval. The architecture shifts between periods in a way that rewards slow wandering. The whole area is compact enough to cover on foot in an afternoon.
