Kaiserburg

Medieval imperial castle overlooking the old city

The Imperial Castle looms over the old city from its sandstone crag. The complex dates from the 11th century and served as the primary residence of the Holy Roman Emperors. The oldest surviving part is the Pentagonal Tower (Fünfeckturm), built by the Hohenzollern burgraves. Climb to the top for the best views over Nuremberg's red rooftops and city walls.

A story
Holy Roman Emperors were required to spend the first year of their reign in Nuremberg — the castle served as the empire's symbolic heart for centuries. The imperial regalia, including the crown and orb, were stored here until Napoleon dissolved the empire in 1806.
