The historical centre packs a remarkable density of medieval and Renaissance monuments into a compact area that is largely pedestrianised. Much of the old city was bombed flat in January 1945, but Nuremberg rebuilt faithfully: the city walls, the churches, the Kaiserburg, and several historic houses were all reconstructed from salvaged stone and detailed photographs. The result is a centre that looks genuinely old even where the fabric is post-war. Southeast of the old town, the Nazi Party Rally Grounds are one of the most significant — and sobering — historical sites in Germany.
