Weinstadl and Henkersteg

Medieval grain store over the Pegnitz, connected by the Hangman's Bridge

The Weinstadl is a large half-timbered building that straddles the Pegnitz River on the northern edge of the old town, connected to the city walls by the Henkersteg (Hangman's Bridge), a covered wooden footbridge. The building dates from 1446 and was used variously as a grain store and a wine depot; it now serves as student accommodation. The combination of the half-timbered facade, the covered bridge, and the tower behind makes this one of the most photographed corners of the old city.

The view from the riverside path looking up at the Weinstadl with the Kaiserburg behind is the closest Nuremberg gets to a classical German postcard image.
