The Glasscherbenhaus (Broken Glass House) is one of the stranger sights in Bavaria — a private villa in the residential quarter above the old town that its owner covered entirely in mosaics of broken glass, ceramic shards, shells, and religious statues. The facade shimmers with sea-green, blue, and gold fragments arranged around figures of Christ, the Virgin, and various saints.
The result is simultaneously kitsch and genuinely extraordinary — a one-man folk art installation on a scale that took decades and considerable wealth. The house is not open to visitors inside, but the exterior can be viewed from the street. It is uphill from the old town, a 10–15 minute walk, and rarely on the tourist circuit — most visitors to Passau never see it.
