Hauptplatz

Triangular main square framed by gabled houses and a Zimmermann town hall

The triangular Hauptplatz, sloping gently toward the river, is the social and architectural heart of Landsberg. Pastel facades — pink, yellow, ochre, mint green — run around three sides, several of them carrying baroque stucco in the loose, sculptural style that southern Bavarians call Rococo when they are feeling generous.

The town hall on the east side, completed in 1721, carries some of Landsberg's finest stucco — designed by Dominikus Zimmermann, who served as the town's mayor and also designed the nearby Wieskirche. The interior is open during office hours; the upstairs council chamber has a Zimmermann ceiling worth a glance.

The fountain in the centre, the Marienbrunnen, is a 17th-century work. A small Saturday market sets up under awnings; in December the square fills with the Christmas market.
