Landsberg am Lech tumbles down a steep hillside to the river, its old town crowned by the Bayertor — one of the most impressive Gothic gate towers in southern Germany. The town has a prosperous, well-kept feel, with painted facades and a handsome main square dominated by a stuccoed town hall designed by Dominikus Zimmermann, the same architect responsible for the Wieskirche.
The Lech river runs fast and clear through town, and the old weir and waterfalls make for a pleasant walk. Landsberg has a darker chapter too: Hitler wrote Mein Kampf while imprisoned in the town's fortress in 1924. The prison still stands but is not open to visitors.
