Johanniskirche

Zimmermann's small rococo masterpiece near the Bayertor

A tiny rococo gem on the way up to the Bayertor, the Johanniskirche was Dominikus Zimmermann's last work, completed in 1750. The exterior is plain and pink — easy to walk past — but the oval interior is one of his finest rooms: pastel pinks and blues, slender pilasters, an explosion of stucco around a Last Judgement ceiling fresco by Zimmermann's son Franz Anton.

The church is small enough that a visit takes ten minutes, but the contrast with the sombre Gothic of the parish church is worth seeing. If you are heading on along the Romantic Road, this is a useful taste of what the much bigger Wieskirche delivers in full force.
