Café am Markt

A small café on or near Peiting's market square, Café am Markt serves the standard repertoire of Bavarian café culture: filter coffee and Milchkaffee, fresh-baked cakes from the local bakery, and in the morning a simple breakfast of bread rolls, cold cuts and jam. It is the kind of place where locals stop in for a mid-morning Pause with the newspaper rather than linger over laptops.

The cake selection typically includes Bienenstich, Apfelkuchen and whatever fruit is in season — in June and July that means strawberries and later blueberries from the surrounding countryside. The atmosphere is low-key and unhurried.

Outside tables are available in fine weather. Hours are roughly 8am to 5 or 6pm; closed one day a week, typically Monday or Wednesday — check locally. For anything more animated in the evenings, Schongau's cafés and bars are nearby.
