Things to Do

Peiting sits on the eastern bank of the Lech in the Voralpenland — the rolling Alpine foothills that stretch between Munich and the mountains. The town itself is quiet and agricultural, but the surrounding landscape rewards those who take the time to explore it on foot or by bike. The Lech Valley corridor running south from here is one of the most intact river landscapes in Central Europe, managed as a nature reserve and rich in birdlife. North along the B17 — the Romantic Road itself — you reach the medieval walls of Schongau within ten minutes.

The Pfaffenwinkel, the "priests' corner" in which Peiting sits, is named for its unusual density of churches, monasteries and pilgrimage sites. Several of the most important are within easy reach: the former Augustinian monastery at Polling, the great pilgrimage church at Steingaden (the Wieskirche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the shrine church on the Hoher Peißenberg. This is a countryside made for unhurried touring, where the main pleasure is the combination of good cycling, baroque architecture and wide Alpine views.
