St. Michael's Church

St. Michael's is Peiting's parish church and its most visible landmark. The church dates in its current form to the Baroque era, and its white-rendered exterior with a characteristic onion-dome tower is typical of Upper Bavarian country church architecture — a style that repeats itself across the Pfaffenwinkel with subtle variations. The interior follows the regional pattern of whitewashed walls, painted ceiling panels and gilded side altars, though on a modest scale appropriate to a market town rather than a major pilgrimage site.

The church stands on an older foundation; a place of worship has occupied the site since at least the 12th century. The Romanesque origins are largely invisible now, overlaid by the rebuilding campaigns of the 17th and 18th centuries that gave so much of this landscape its present character. It is open daily during normal hours and is still in active use as the local parish church.

Worth visiting on arrival for five minutes of orientation — the tower is a useful landmark and the interior is typically Left unlocked during the day.
