Café Sibylle

GDR-era café on Karl-Marx-Allee with a small museum of the boulevard's history

Address Karl-Marx-Allee 72, Friedrichshain

A café with a past: opened in the 1950s as part of the grand socialist boulevard then called Stalinallee, Café Sibylle has served coffee and cake to generations of East Berliners and survived closure and reinvention to keep going. The interior is plain and pleasant, the cakes are homemade, and it remains a genuinely local spot rather than a tourist trap.

At the back, a small permanent exhibition tells the story of the Karl-Marx-Allee — the monumental Zuckerbäckerstil architecture, the 1953 uprising that began among its construction workers, and daily life along the boulevard. Coffee and a history lesson in one stop.
