Simon-Dach-Straße

Friedrichshain's most concentrated bar strip, best appreciated on a warm evening with no plans

Simon-Dach-Straße runs east from the Warschauer Straße S-Bahn through the heart of Friedrichshain's café district to Boxhagener Platz, and for most of its length it is wall-to-wall outdoor seating. The mix has shifted upmarket over the past decade — there are fewer of the €2 beer-and-plastic-chair dives and more places with actual menus and decent wine — but the outdoor culture remains intact and the density of options makes it one of the better streets in Berlin for deciding where to eat or drink by just walking the length of it and seeing what appeals.

The street is liveliest on warm evenings from May to September, when tables overflow onto the pavement and sometimes the road itself. Lunchtime and brunch on Sundays are also peak hours — Friedrichshain runs on a late schedule, and queues form outside the more popular brunch spots from about noon onwards. At the eastern end, Boxhagener Platz opens things up with the Saturday flea market and the surrounding café bars; at the western end, Warschauer Straße connects to the RAW-Gelände clubs and the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg bridge across the Spree.
