Berlin's first crematorium, a domed neoclassical building of 1911, fell out of use and reopened in 2013 as one of the city's more atmospheric cultural venues. The circular former cremation hall, with its coffered dome and ring of columns, now hosts concerts, film screenings and installations; the old courtyards and outbuildings hold studios, a record label, and a café-restaurant.
The programme leans toward experimental music, jazz and arthouse cinema, and a former machine room beneath the building has been converted into a striking subterranean concert space. Check what's on before visiting — there is no permanent exhibition, and the building is at its best when something is happening in it.
