Wendish Museum

The only museum in Germany dedicated to Sorbian/Wendish culture

The Wendisches Museum occupies a historic building near the Altmarkt and is the primary museum dedicated to the culture, history, and language of the Sorbs, the only Slavic people indigenous to Germany. The Sorbs have lived in the Lusatia region for over a thousand years, and Cottbus is the unofficial capital of Lower Sorbian culture.

The permanent exhibition covers traditional dress, crafts, Easter customs, and the history of Sorbian resistance to Germanisation efforts across the centuries. Texts are in German and Lower Sorbian. If you have any interest in minority cultures or the complexity of German history east of the Oder, this museum is genuinely rewarding.

A story
The Sorbs are the only Slavic minority native to Germany, numbering around 60,000 people in the Lusatia region. Their language, Lower Sorbian, is closer to Polish and Czech than to German, and every street sign in central Cottbus appears in both languages. The community maintains its traditions actively — Sorbian Easter customs and folk costumes are still practised.
