Cottbus punches above its size for a city of 100,000. The Branitz Palace and its extraordinary English landscape garden are the main draw, but the Sorbian cultural heritage, the Art Nouveau theatre, and the medieval remnants around the Altmarkt make the city worth a half-day or more. The Spreewald forest begins just north of the city.
