Café Ritter

Café Ritter is an old-fashioned German Kaffeehaus near the Luisenplatz — the kind of place that does proper filter coffee, excellent cakes, and a full breakfast served until noon. The interior has retained much of its interwar character, with marble-topped tables, bentwood chairs, and newspapers on wooden racks. It is the best place in Darmstadt for a slow morning coffee and the sort of cake that requires a fork.

In the evenings it becomes a wine bar, drawing a quieter, older crowd than the nearby Martinsviertel bars.
