Darmstadt punches well above its weight for a city of 160,000. The Mathildenhöhe UNESCO World Heritage site dominates the cultural agenda, but there is plenty else to explore: a superb state museum, a spectacular Hundertwasser building, and a Russian chapel that is one of the least expected sights in Germany.
