Vortex Garden

The Vortex Garden is a privately owned but publicly accessible garden immediately adjacent to the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony, making it easy to combine with a visit to the Wedding Tower and the colony buildings. The circular patterns of the planting — concentric rings of different plant species radiating from a central point — are best appreciated from above, either from the terrace of the neighbouring building or from the upper floors of the Wedding Tower.

It is small, quiet, and somewhat mysterious — the kind of place that rewards wandering and wondering why it exists. The contrast with the formal Jugendstil gardens of the colony just next door is pleasantly jarring.

Entry is free. Open during daylight hours.

A story
The garden was designed in the 1990s by the artist Walther Dahn, who was inspired by the crop circle phenomenon then at its height of public fascination. The circular patterns, viewed from the terrace of the adjacent exhibition hall, create an optical effect not unlike looking down at a vortex — an unexpectedly psychedelic sight in a German city park.
