Adlerturm

Medieval Rhine tower where Goethe once stayed

Corner tower of the old town fortifications on Rheinstrasse, on the bank of the Rhine. Late Gothic, built in the 15th century, four storeys and 20.5 metres high with walls one metre thick, including a dungeon accessible only through a hole at the top of the cellar. The tower once housed an inn called Zum Adler (the Eagle), from which it takes its name. Goethe was a guest here several times during his visits to Rudesheim, drawn by the wonderful views of the Rhine.
