Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett

Tucked into a courtyard off the Oberstrasse, this museum houses around 350 self-playing mechanical musical instruments dating from the 18th to the early 20th century. The collection ranges from simple music boxes small enough to hold in a palm to a three-metre fairground organ that fills the room with sound. Barrel organs, orchestrions, pianolas, and automata are all represented.

What makes this different from a static display is that the instruments are regularly demonstrated by guides who run them through their repertoire. The sound of a full orchestrion playing a Strauss waltz in a vaulted stone room is genuinely arresting. Open from March to December, with guided tours in multiple languages. The museum is in a 16th-century half-timbered building on the Oberstrasse.
