Getting Around

There are no cars on Juist. Transport on the island is on foot, by bicycle, or — for longer trips and luggage — by horse-drawn carriage. Bikes can be hired by the day or week from several shops near the harbour and in the village; the long, flat sand track along the southern dunes makes for one of the most pleasant cycle rides on the German coast.

Horse-drawn carriages meet every arriving ferry to take guests with luggage to their hotel. Carriages are also the only way to reach the eastern half of the island in reasonable time. The pace of all this — slow horses, no traffic — is the essential Juist experience and the reason most visitors come.
