The eastern third of Juist is a strict nature reserve — the Kalfamer — that protects nesting and roosting sites for sea birds and migrating waders. The reserve is closed completely from April to August during the breeding season; in autumn and winter you can walk a marked sand track along the southern edge as far as the eastern tip of the island.
The reserve is one of the most important high-tide roosts in the German Wadden Sea, and during migration you can see oystercatchers, curlews, dunlin, and bar-tailed godwits in tens of thousands. The walk from the village to the tip and back is about 25 kilometres; a horse-drawn carriage runs part of the way in summer. A good guide is essential to find the birds.
