Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum

The Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum is one of Germany's best archaeological museums and a genuine surprise in a medium-sized city. Its Egyptian collection is exceptional — one of the largest and most important outside Egypt — with material spanning the entire range of pharaonic civilization, from the pre-dynastic period to the Roman era. The Pelizaeus collection of Old Kingdom pieces is particularly strong.

Beyond Egypt, the museum holds significant collections from Peru, China, and across the ancient world, assembled by Hildesheim merchants and scholars over the 19th and early 20th centuries. Temporary exhibitions regularly supplement the permanent collections with loans from major international institutions. The museum is housed in a substantial purpose-built building a few minutes' walk from the market square.

A story
Wilhelm Pelizaeus, a German merchant who spent decades in Egypt in the late 19th century, assembled one of the finest Egyptian antiquities collections outside Egypt itself. He donated it to Hildesheim in 1907. The museum now holds over 4,000 Egyptian objects, including a remarkable collection of Old Kingdom material — statues, reliefs, and grave goods from the pyramid age.
