Hildesheim punches well above its size for medieval art and architecture. The city's two UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches and their extraordinary treasury of early medieval metalwork would be the highlight of most German cities. The reconstructed market square, the cathedral cloister with its legendary rose bush, and several museums make this a place where a half-day stop can easily become a full day.
