The old harbour quarter along the Ilmenau river is the most atmospheric corner of Lüneburg. Heavy timber cranes once lowered sacks of salt onto barges here; the crane warehouses — massive, dark, and handsome — still stand along the waterfront. Today the ground floors are bars and restaurants, and on warm evenings the whole stretch fills up with people sitting at outdoor tables along the water. It's the best reason to stay overnight rather than just day-tripping.
