The Stadtmarkt is the main market square at the heart of Wolfenbüttel's old town. Surrounded by half-timbered buildings on three sides, it is the natural starting and finishing point for a walk through the town. The square hosts a small weekly market and the town's Christmas market in December.
The facades around the Stadtmarkt date mostly from the seventeenth century and represent some of the finest Fachwerk (half-timbered) construction in Lower Saxony — elaborate, well-preserved, and not yet over-touristed. The Marienkirche tower rises at the edge of the square. A few cafes with outdoor seating make it a good place to sit and watch the town go about its business.
