A well-preserved Cistercian nunnery founded in 1270, now housing Rostock's Cultural History Museum. The Gothic church, cloister, and refectory survive largely intact, making this one of the best-preserved medieval monastic complexes in northern Germany. The museum collection covers the history of Rostock from medieval Hanseatic trading city to the 20th century.

Highlights include Hanseatic-era merchant artefacts, a fine collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings, and applied arts from the Biedermeier period. The cloister garden is peaceful and free to enter. The church itself, with its slender Gothic choir, is worth visiting independently of the museum.

A story
The abbey was founded in 1270 by Queen Margaret of Denmark, who is buried here. It remained a functioning Cistercian convent until 1920 — an extraordinarily long survival through the Reformation, wars, and social upheaval — and the last abbess died in 1920 after a tenure of 58 years.
