Rostock is well connected by rail. Direct trains run from Berlin (about 2.5 hours), Hamburg (about 2 hours), and other major German cities, arriving at Rostock Hauptbahnhof just south of the old town. From the station, the old town is a 15-minute walk or a short tram ride.
The Rostock-Laage Airport handles some domestic and European connections, but most visitors arrive by train. By car, the A19 motorway connects Rostock to Berlin; the A20 links it to Hamburg and the rest of the northern coast.
Ferries to Sweden (Trelleborg) and Finland (Helsinki) depart from the Überseehafen ferry terminal, connected by tram to the city centre. Stena Line and TT-Line operate routes. This is a popular route for those combining a German Baltic holiday with Scandinavia.
