St Peter's stands at the eastern edge of the old town with its distinctive 117-metre spire — the tallest in Rostock and visible for miles across the flat Baltic coastal plain. The church dates from the 13th century and has been rebuilt and modified many times; the slender neo-Gothic spire was added in the 19th century after the earlier tower collapsed.
The interior is spare and Lutheran, with good medieval brickwork. The tower observation platform offers the best panoramic views over Rostock's rooftops and down to the harbour on a clear day. Worth the climb, especially in good weather.
