Eating Out

Stralsund's restaurant scene is modest but satisfying. The focus is on Baltic seafood — smoked eel, herring in various forms, and fresh fish — alongside the standard northern German fare of pork and potato dishes. The harbour area has the most concentration of restaurants; the Alter Markt has a few options in the medieval townhouses.

Fresh fish can be bought directly from the harbour fishmongers and smoked fish stalls near the quay — cheaper and often better than restaurant versions. A Fischbrötchen (open sandwich with smoked or pickled herring) from a harbour stall is the quintessential Stralsund snack.
