Alte Aachener Kaffeehausgesellschaft

Legendary Aachen café with 18th-century interior serving Printen gingerbread

The oldest and most famous café in Aachen, founded in 1782 on the Markt facing the Dom. The interior — painted ceiling, dark wood panelling, mirrors, and velvet chairs — has changed little since the 18th century. It sells Printen, the spiced gingerbread that is Aachen's local speciality, in a range of hardnesses from soft and chewy to rock-solid, along with Aachener Poschweck (a raisin and lemon loaf at Easter) and a variety of cakes. The coffee is good and the atmosphere is genuine — this is a place where Aachen has been gossiping for two and a half centuries.

The name is something of a mouthful; locals simply call it the Café am Dom or the "Postwagen". Get a slice of Printen and a window seat looking out at the Dom facade.
