Getting Around

The city centre is compact enough to walk. For longer distances, Bochum is served by trams and U-Bahn lines operated by BOGESTRA, the regional transit authority. A single ticket covers both trams and U-Bahn within the city and costs around €3; a day ticket is better value if you plan to make several journeys.

The S-Bahn connects Bochum Hauptbahnhof to Essen (S1, S3) and Dortmund (S1) with trains every few minutes during the day, making it easy to combine Bochum with neighbouring cities. The German Mining Museum is a 15-minute walk north of the main station, or a short tram ride on U35 to the Deutsches Bergbaumuseum stop.

Cycling is possible on the flat parts of the city, but infrastructure is patchy. Bochum participates in the VRR bike-share scheme.
