The Halde Rheinpreußen is a former coal spoil tip north of Moers that has been transformed into a public park and viewpoint. At 70 metres above the surrounding plain, it is one of the highest points in this part of the Lower Rhine region, and the views on a clear day extend to the towers of Duisburg, the Rhine valley, and westward into the flat Dutch landscape. A winding path leads to the summit, where a sculpture by the artist Otto Piene marks the top.
The halde is typical of the Ruhr landscape — industrial archaeology greened over and repurposed for public recreation. Below it, the infrastructure of the former Rheinpreußen mine is visible as you walk up. The surrounding area has become a nature reserve with good birdwatching. The halde is free to visit and can be walked in about an hour up and back; dogs are welcome. It is about 4 km north of central Moers.
