The Bacharacher Hahn is the town's most celebrated vineyard site — a steep south-facing slope of Devonian slate that produces some of the finest Mittelrhein Riesling. The vines are terraced into the hillside immediately above and to the north of the town, and you can walk into them directly from the upper town wall. The combination of slate soils and the Rhine microclimate pushes the fruit toward concentrated minerality with high natural acidity. Local producers including Toni Jost and Ratzenberger bottle single-vineyard wines from here worth seeking out. The Hahn is not a winery with a tasting room — it is a working vineyard you walk through — but any decent wine shop in town will have bottles from it.
