Bacharach punches well above its size for a town of 2,000 people. The medieval core is almost entirely intact — walking the town walls takes you above the rooftops and gives you a clear sense of how the settlement was designed as a defensive unit. Stahleck Castle on the ridge above is the dominant landmark, and the ruins of Werner Chapel on the hillside between town and castle are among the most atmospheric Gothic remnants on the Rhine.
