Werner Chapel

The Werner Chapel stands on the hillside between the town and Stahleck Castle — a roofless Gothic shell with delicate tracery windows still intact after 700 years of exposure. The red sandstone has weathered to a deep rust, and the arches frame views of vineyard slopes and the Rhine below. It is not a major monument by any European standard, but in context — tucked into the terraced hillside, half-hidden by vines — it is one of the most evocative ruins on the river. The path up from the town takes about ten minutes.

A story
Werner Chapel was begun in 1289 after a local boy named Werner was found dead and anti-Semitic rumours blamed the Jewish community — one of the more shameful chapters of medieval Rhine history. Construction continued for over a century and was never fully completed. The roof collapsed in the 18th century after French troops damaged the structure, leaving the Gothic tracery open to the sky.
