The Pfalzgalerie is the main art museum of the Palatinate region, housed in a villa-style building that has been extended several times. The permanent collection runs from the late eighteenth century to the present day, with particular strength in nineteenth-century Romantic painting and in German Expressionism. The museum owns works by Max Slevogt, who was born in this region, alongside pieces by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, and others of the German Expressionist generation.
The contemporary section includes works commissioned from artists with connections to the region. The museum is well-maintained and clearly presented, and its scale — not overwhelming — makes it genuinely enjoyable to spend a couple of hours here rather than just rushing through.
