Kaiserslautern's attractions divide neatly between the city and the forest. In town: the excavated ruins of Barbarossa's imperial palace, the Pfalzgalerie art museum, the remarkable Japanese Garden, and the Fritz Walter Stadium on the hill. Outside the city: the Palatinate Forest, one of Germany's great natural spaces, with sandstone rock formations, wine villages, and hundreds of kilometres of walking trails.
