The Middle Rhine is one of the most-written-about landscapes in Europe. Romantic poetry — Heine, Brentano, the Schlegels — gave the gorge its mythic shape in the early nineteenth century; the same period produced an enormous quantity of Rhine-tourism literature in English and French. A handful of these have aged better than others.
