The triangular Münzplatz was the medieval mint square — coins were struck here for the Archbishops of Trier from the eleventh century until the eighteenth. The building on the south side is the eighteenth-century Metternich Palace, birthplace of the Austrian Chancellor Klemens von Metternich in 1773.
Today the square is one of the busiest restaurant terraces in Koblenz on a summer evening. A statue of Metternich looks out from the Palace facade; a small Roman-era cellar under the south side of the square is occasionally open to the public.
