Things to Do

The Middle Rhine Valley is primarily about the landscape — castles, river, steep vineyards, medieval towns. The best way to experience it is to combine boat travel with walking and cycling; the Rhine Gorge cycle path runs along both banks. Wine tasting in the villages is an essential activity during harvest season (September to October). The Lorelei rock is the valley's most famous single sight; Marksburg Castle its best-preserved fortress.
