Sankt Marien-Kirche

Sankt Marien-Kirche is a late-Gothic brick church in the old town, one of three medieval churches that together defined the religious topography of Flensburg. The building dates from the fifteenth century with later additions, and the exterior shows the characteristic North German brick Gothic style typical of the Baltic region.

The church is known for its organ, which has been rebuilt and expanded at various points over the centuries but retains historical pipes of considerable musical interest. The interior is plainer than Sankt Nikolai but has a quiet dignity. The church is typically open during the day.

A story
Sankt Marien was built in the fifteenth century as the church of Flensburg's craftsmen and artisan guilds, a counterpart to the merchant-patronised Sankt Nikolai. The distinction between which social class worshipped where was formally maintained in Flensburg for centuries. The church's organ is one of the significant historical instruments in northern Germany, and the annual organ concerts draw audiences from across the region.
